Why Earth Day 🌎is more important than ever.🤔

Why Earth Day 🌎is more important than ever.🤔

22 April is Earth Day. While the coronavirus (COVID-19) has been spreading around the world and dominating news headlines, thoughts and attention, the need to take climate action has remained as urgent as ever.

By the end of 2020, global CO2 emissions need to have dropped by 7.6% and continue to fall by 7.6% each year for us to have keep global heating under 1.5oC, according to the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP)Emission Gap Report 2019.

Earth day 2020 is not just the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, but also the anniversary of the signing of the Paris Agreement to take climate action.

Earth day 2020 is not just the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, but also the anniversary of the signing of the Paris Agreement to take climate action.

The pandemic is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of humans and the planet in the face of global scale threats. Unchecked damage to our environment must be addressed. In his response to the socio-economic impacts of COVID-19, United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres noted that, "Had we been further advanced in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, we could better face this challenge."

Earth Day in 2020

Marking its half-century anniversary, and selecting climate action as its theme, Earth Day 2020 was already poised to be a historic event. An occasion planned to bring people physically together across a series of events, COVID-19 has now prompted a dramatic shift to completely digital and virtual platforms. Earth Day 2020 calls for 24 hours of actions, big and small, for people and the planet. On this 50th anniversary, civil society organizers hope to fill the world’s digital landscape with global conversations, positive acts, performances, webinars and events supporting urgent action on climate change.

As the world rushes to plan for a post-pandemic recovery, UNEP and other parts of the United Nations system see this as opportunity to call attention to the need to “build back better.” The risks faced by ignoring the threats of environmental destruction must be understood and addressed with protections and policies. April 22 is a timely reminder to embrace the opportunities of the natural world for green jobs, sustainable economic stimulus, for urgently taking action to protect ourselves against unsurvivable global heating and for securing healthy, dignified futures.

What can you do?

Just like on the first Earth Day, 50 years ago, it is time to demonstrate solidarity, take action and send a clear message to world leaders to act on climate change, halt biodiversity and habitat loss, and make certain environmental protection is a fundamental foundation of building back better.

Nature is in crisis, threatened by biodiversity and habitat loss, global heating and toxic pollution. Failure to act is failing humanity. Addressing the current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and protecting ourselves against future global threats requires sound management of hazardous medical and chemical waste; strong and global stewardship of nature and biodiversity; and a clear commitment to “building back better”, creating green jobs and facilitating the transition to carbon neutral economies. Humanity depends on action now for a resilient and sustainable future.

Video Games and Kids

               Video Games and Kids

Video games and kids, the link is not an ancient one; rather it is a recent association, about 25 odd years or so. But the history of video gaming is as old as 1947 when Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device was developed. Video games could be played only on computers. Video game consoles of today were not available during the 1900’s. Most of the early games were accessible only on US universities' mainframe computers. There was no gaming industry, it was a simple hobby. Various developments were made with varying technologies. The coin-operated ones or better known as Arcade Games took gaming to a new level. In fact, through the 1970s -1980s, these games were so popular that this time period is known as The Golden age of Arcade Video Games. By 1990’s home video games in the form of gaming consoles became the new rage. Keeping track of the video games, there are about eight generations of video game consoles as of 2012.
That was then, now video games and children have a stronger bond than ever before. Technology has taken gaming to a whole new level. Console players like XBOX360, Wii and PS3 are favourites of kids today. Video gaming industry is a billion dollar venture and caters to the taste of teens with specialised products like gaming desktops, gaming websites, gaming headset, gaming chairs etc. In 2006, the entertainment software industry's value added to the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was $3.8 billion. Handheld console players like PSP and Nintendo DS have made video gaming portable. But what has impacted video gaming, is the increased portability with smartphones emerging as the new trend in mobile gaming. Kids today do not need to stick around the T.V., video gaming is now anywhere, any-time, pastime. This is the future of gaming and that is what makes the connection between the teens and video games more intimate. All these developments are also affordable which makes it easily accessible.
All these changes are good for the economy but are these good for kids or teens. Let us view some of the statistics towards this trend.

Video Games and Kids Statistics

U.S. computer and video game software sales grew six per cent in 2007 to $9.5 billion – more than tripling industry software sales since 1996.
38% of homes in America have a video game console
According to a study of 1,178 children in the US, almost 9 per cent of child gamers are pathologically or clinically addicted to playing video games.
23% of youth say that they have felt addicted to video games, with about one-third of males and a little more than one in 10 females reporting the sensation, according to the survey by Harris Interactive
44% of the youth aged 8 to 18 also reported their friends are addicted to video games, the survey said. The average child 8 to 12 plays 13 hours of video games per week, while teens age 13 to 18-year play 14 hours of video games per week, according to the survey (Harris Interactive).
The two single largest markets for video games are Japan and the US.
84% of tablet owners play games (Touchstone Research)
70 – 80% of all mobile downloads are games (Touchstone Research)
The most installed app type is arcade games, and the most purchased are a card and casino games. (Jeremy Copp, Comscore)
The mobile gaming statistics are quite glaring and these are just from the United States and Japan. The worldwide figures would be more glaring. These figures translate a high usage of video gaming among youths. Such an activity is bound to have an impact on children.

Impact of Video Games on Children

Is there anything which doesn’t have pros and cons? In that way, there are advantages and disadvantages of playing video games, too. The pros and cons of gaming need to be understood so that the drawbacks of video games can be weeded out and its positive attributes are used to full potential.

Advantages and Disadvantages Disadvantages

Advantages of Playing Video Games

Video games advantages may not sound good to the orthodox mind. But that wisdom is about to be enlightened with video gaming benefits which go beyond the recreation aspect.
  • Learning Process: The reason why the kids are so attracted to games is that they are something which they haven’t explored. A fresh mind is always eager to learn more and more. Amongst these learnings is social and interpersonal skills like circumspection, collaboration, diplomacy, execution, planning and many more. These skills come in use in immediate or mediate future. Research studies have proved that even violent gaming increases the learning abilities if provisioned with guidance. This fact is supported by studies of gamers who are pursuing successful careers as doctors, entrepreneurs, lawyers etc.
  • Stretches the Limits of Imagination: Video games use various types of animations and show' unique equipment. These are the result of animator’s imaginations which further fuel the imagination of the kids. It boosts their creativity towards new dimensions. This imagination can be used in their academic, extracurricular activities and future activities.
  • Improves Hand-Eye Coordination: Video game benefits hand-eye coordination. The way the mouse or a keypad is used, helps in making the fingers agile towards various precision, quick movements of the hands, thereby improving overall cognitive thinking. The eye-hand coordination can be used to increase typing speed, improve handwriting, benefit craft-based activities and other useful activities. Certain studies have shown that surgeons who play video games are faster and better than non-players.
  • Means of Interactive Entertainment: Video games are a means of entertainment, an interactive one. Watching television which is a favourite time pass of children is a passive mode of entertainment. Video gaming involves the gamer and provides the freedom to act on one’s own pace. The gamer doesn’t need to be instructed or wait for decisions to be made on his behalf. The cheer of winning and disappointment of losing makes the teenagers experienced towards various emotions.
  • Frustration Release: Amongst the various advantages of computer games is the emotional release these provide. The world is more complicated today and so are the challenges faced by teenagers. Jealousy, hatred, disappointment, hardships and various other emotions need to be dealt with. Mobile gaming provides an avenue of releasing pent-up emotions which may not be necessarily shared with someone else.
  • Confidence Builders: Games are good confidence builders. They inspire effort towards an objective. Most of the games save the scores and sessions which are graphs of achievements and new aims. Winning a game provides a reward that builds and reinforces self-confidence in individuals. Specialising in gaming amongst peers makes one realise the importance of effort. It provides a feeling of control over one’s actions. This confidence is all the more necessary for children suffering from mental disorders. In such individuals, it stimulates brain activity.
  • Stimulates Curiosity: Playing mobile games stimulates curiosity towards the upcoming levels, scores and other relative components. Curiosity leads to discovery and discovery is itself a solution. The curiosity generated here may not just remain limited to gaming. It may extend towards the hardware and software of the gaming devices. This curiosity can be inspiring towards one’s answers to certain queries. Today’s gamers may become future scientists, geologists, inventors etc.
  • Means to Discipline: While playing video games the kids come to know the importance of discipline. Every game has a rule which if not followed results in elimination or end of the game. Children learn a lesson of rules and regulations which are transferable in real life. The lesson of discipline can be helpful in becoming a responsible citizen. Parents can use the habit of gaming as a means to discipline. Parents can develop an environment where such recreation is not a necessity but a privilege which needs to be earned. Completing the homework and then providing the freedom to play games also encourages discipline. Additional positive tasks can be used as yardsticks towards gaming time.
  • Develops Spirit of Competitiveness:  Playing video games is a competitive sport itself and while playing you are in competition with your own self or other competitors. Competitiveness sharpens one’s skills and gives the kids the strength to face the competitive world in the academic environment and future corporate environment. The young players do not need the motivation to compete as they are already motivated to do so. This competitiveness can be directed towards other achievements in the real world.
  • Socialisation: Online games or multiplayer games involve a number of people. This encourages socialisation and not just local or national socialisation but of international level as well. Modern generation families are working families and often there is a meagre interaction between the members. If family members and kids arrange for gaming at a certain point of time it can firm the family ties.
  • Improves Mental Ability: There is no doubt that games thrill us, at the same time they increase our brain activity. Strategy games and puzzles increase our focus towards our goal. Same goes for kids when they try to clear a level or finish a game. They are constantly thinking and reacting towards the stimuli of games. Exposure to video games on PC makes one technologically literate. It also introduces the functioning and operating of a gaming gadget.

Disadvantages of Video Games

As it has been mentioned above, the flip side highlights the negative effects of video games. Keeping in mind the contradictory nature of gaming pros and cons, it is not surprising to know that the positivity of video games can be nullified with various drawbacks of video games.
  • Encourages Violent Behaviour: The most highlighted negative aspect of gaming is that it encourages violent behaviour. Gentile & Anderson (2003) state that playing video games may increase aggressive behaviour because violent acts are continually repeated throughout the video game. This repetitive behaviour becomes an effective teaching method in reinforcing learning patterns. The researchers concluded that players who had prior experience playing violent video games responded with an increased level of aggression when they encountered confrontation. Various American medical associations have cautioned parents about negative effects in children when they view a violent act. These associations include the American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychological Association, American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. There have been reports of tragic incidents which have been inspired by video games. For example, in June 2008, four teens went on a crime spree. They robbed a man, knocked his teeth out, stopped a woman driving a black BMW and stole her car and her cigarettes. All this happened at New Hyde Park, New York. All these were obsessed with Grand Theft Auto IV game. This is just one of the incidents, there are numerous such incidents which highlight the aggressive behavior induced by video games.
  • Stunts Brain Development:  Kids have only one chance to develop their brains and this chance is limited to the age of 20. And if this development is hindered it can result in a low level of intelligence. As per an article in the Observer - A research was conducted by Professor Ryuta Kawashima and his team at Tohoku University in Japan. The research involved measuring the level of brain activity in hundreds of teenagers playing a Nintendo game. The brain activity of students doing a simple, repetitive arithmetical exercise was also measured. When these scans were compared it was found that the computer game only stimulated activity in the parts of the brain associated with vision and movement. Maths exercise stimulated the frontal lobe in a better way. Video games allow only a limited portion of the brain to develop. The brain's frontal lobe plays an important role in the repression of antisocial impulses and is associated with memory, learning and emotion. Video games if played for a long time with repetitive actions stop the frontal lobes of kid’s brains from developing fully.
  • Obesity: Obesity and video games gel together very well. This is because most of the gaming involves a stationary position. Most of the time kids are sitting in front of the television for 4-5 hours. Health practitioners point out that gaming regularly for long hour’s decreases physical activity increases the food intake and unhealthy food choices. This lowers the kid’s metabolic rate and increases the weight gain. Once obese, they are prone to a number of other diseases like asthma, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and many others. Obesity also leads to depression and mental disorders owing to the demoralising behaviour of peers and parents.
  • Harmful Addiction: Video gaming addiction is harmful in a number of ways. Excessive gaming leans social development, physical activity and academic performance. Gaming addicts remain involved in ways of reaching the next stage. This addiction can make them lose interest in anything else. The world of teen revolves around gaming and they become dependent on it either for emotion release as claimed by researchers. Studies have shown that the gaming addiction stimulates the same regions of the brain as found in alcohol and drug addicts. It is a real problem with serious consequences and unfortunately, it doesn’t have any fixed standard to determine the symptoms and behaviour. This is because every individual is unique and so are the behaviour patterns. More confusing are the statistics and findings which are not uniform. Certain issues like low grades, loss of interest, depression, anxiety, obesity etc. are very much real. Take the case of Seungseob Lee of South Korea, in 2005; he played StarCraft in the city of Taegu almost continuously for fifty hours. As a result, he suffered a cardiac arrest which resulted in his death. This shows that video gaming addiction can be deadly.
  • Wastage of Time: Playing video games is also considered a waste of time. The skills of gaming are hard of any use in the real world. Kids do not get scholarships and they are not awarded degrees for playing games. Nobody gives admission on the basis of your gaming scores. Your achievements are restricted to the gaming world only; they do not enhance your real potential. The same time spent on arts, music, sports etc. are recognised as real achievements and they are of great use in the real world.
  • Sleep Disorders: Amongst various health problems are various sleep disorders affecting the young mind. Gaming alters the sleep patterns especially when you sleep at irregular intervals. Gaming on mobile phones is more disruptive. Surveys conducted by Jan Van den Bulck, a senior lecturer in psychology at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium have shown this fact. As per the surveys, one in five teenagers reported being awakened regularly by their mobile devices. Playing at night eats up the sleep time which the body tries to recover during the daytime. Similarly sleeping in the day makes you lose sleep at night. This cycle if remains undisrupted also causes behaviour problems.
  • Spendthrift Tendencies: Gaming expenses can be a big concern for parents especially when these crop up unexpectedly. This trend owes its origin to mobile gaming. Game designers craft fully create games which leave you wanting more. For example ‘Free to Premium’ games offer you the limited freedom to play games. You have to pay for removing these limitations. These games have a tendency to addict and there have been numerous cases where kids have used their parents mobile towards gaming privileges intentionally or unintentionally. Even otherwise the addiction factor puts a lot of weight on your bills.
  • Poor Academic Performances: It is a wide known fact that teens who play a lot of video games score less than the non-addicted ones. In fact, their score is very poor in comparison. It is obvious that time and energy spent on gaming will hamper your other activities. Thus there is a lack or total loss of interest which will be reflected in the grades.
  • A Danger to Security: Threat to security comes from online gaming, either mobile or otherwise. Online safety is already a serious issue faced by the corporate world. This issue has the capacity to become serious in the world of children. Playing games with multiple partners over the internet is also facilitated with chat rooms. Gaming forums and messaging services can compromise the security of the information contained in the gaming device. The security breach can be used in various activities like spreading the virus, online tracking and other privacy issues.
  • Exposure to Mature Content: Adult themes are common in video games. Apart from graphic violence, aggression they introduce drug use and sexual acts. Such mature content is not suitable for the minds of children. The curious mind wants to explore and understand what it’s all about? In this quest, kids may end up endangering themselves in the form of diseases and addiction. Some games give false notions of abusing women and substances which may inspire the kids to do the same. Early knowledge of such things also matures the mind prematurely which will have abnormal outcomes.
  • Influence of Fake Reality: The world of gaming is a virtual one and far from real. Whatever happens in the games does not necessarily happen in the real world. It is an imaginary world filled with exaggerations. For the young mind, it can become a part of his reality and we observe a changed individual in terms of manners and behaviour. For example, in shooting games, you can shoot anybody without any consequences. In some others, you can jump off a cliff or a building. These don’t imply in the real world. However, in instances where games have inspired people to do the same shows the effect. Today’s kids are more aggressive in their behaviour and language. They are outspoken and cannot control their emotions. These are the impressions of the virtual world which they try to print in the real world.
  • Early Exposure to Kids: Mobile phones or more aptly smartphones have revolutionised the communication world. There’s, however more to it. Affordable prices and availability of mobile devices has made them popular and widespread. So don’t get surprised when you see a 5-6-year-old kid pressing the keys to play a game. In the coming years, it wouldn’t be a great surprise either when you see 2-3 years old toying with the mobile phones. For some, it may appear as a ‘Wow Thing’ but is it? Early introduction to such equipment is harmful just in the same way as it is for 12-13 years old. It wouldn’t be an understatement that the harm would rather double up. 2005 research studies show that the average age that U.S. youngsters started to use electronic gadgets had fallen from just over 8 to just over 6 ½. This is an alarming trend.
  • Eye Problems: If studies haven&rs quo;t troubled the vision of kids than video games surely will. Adults who work for a long time on PC already suffer from ‘Computer Vision Syndrome’. This syndrome makes the eyes and brain react differently to words on a computer screen than they do to printed text. Similar symptoms like eye discomfort, fatigue, blurry vision and headaches are often experienced in avid gaming kids. Extensive gaming without sufficient breaks also affects the focus of the eye. This happens because human eyes are not meant for prolonged viewing of electronics devices.
  • Skin and Strain Problems: A skin disorder & ls quo;Palmar hidradenitis&rs quo; is known to be caused by console gaming. It occurs as painful lesions on the palms and fingers. A new type of terminology has also been formed like & ndash; Nintendonitis which causes tendon injuries of the hands and wrists of Nintendo players. Pain in the back, hands, neck and wrist are also caused by regular and or excessive gaming.
ConclusionLooking at the video games pros and cons it is very much clear that it is a very much issue which needs proper addressing. Earlier the negative effects of video games were more evident and publicized. Nonetheless, video game benefits cannot be discounted. A lot of effective research supervised by international agencies needed to be done as there are inconsistencies in the research. Statistics and figures are contradictory. There is also the possibility of fake statistics promoted by the gaming industry to sustain their business. The possibility cannot be ruled out as the profit is large and tempting. Pros and cons of gaming will always be there and always have been. It is up to the parents and if possible the authorities and producers of gaming accessories and equipment to ensure that gaming does not harm the kids. Researchers and scientists can also contribute towards this effect by negating the cons of games and utilizing the pros to the max towards productive output and or future.

Water Conservation- Needs and Methods

             Water Conservation- Needs and Methods

One of the strategies in water conservation is rain water harvesting. Digging ponds, lakes, canals, expanding the water reservoir, and installing rain water catching ducts and filtration systems on homes are different methods of harvesting rain water.

Water is a simple liquid that is of great importance for human life and sustenance. Water is a very large part of our lives.  In fact, 57% to 75% of our body is made out of the liquid. Water is very important for everyone living in this world, and to imagine life without water is impossible. There are about 1.4 billion people who don't have access to clean drinking water, in the world of 6.8 billion people, 20.59% don't have clean drinking water.  Obviously, water is a huge part of our daily lives and without it, you cannot live. Our daily activities are so much dependent on water that we cannot even live without water for a single day. We use water for many purposes such as drinking, washing, bathing, cleaning and agricultural purposes. Water is essential for life and it is very important to save water.
It is simply impossible to imagine human life without water, if there are no ample sources of water left then it would be a matter of great concern. Without water the will be no harvesting, no drinking water, no washing, cleaning and cooking as well. Hence it is very important to use our present water sources judiciously and try to save as much water as possible. It is very important to realize water conservation benefits and also to implement those in our day to day life. Water conservation encompasses the policies, strategies and activities to manage fresh water as a sustainable resource, and efforts to protect the water environment while maintaining a balance between current and future human demand. Population, household size and growth and affluence all affect how much water is used. Factors such as climate change will increase pressures on natural water resources, especially in manufacturing and agricultural irrigation. It is very important to realize the need for water conservation in the community as well as personal level.
Over the past few years a rapid growth in populations, modernization, growing industrialization, and expanding agriculture has pushed up the demand for water in the urban as well as rural areas. Human demands are increasing day by day but the natural resources are in a limited quantity. Efforts have been made to collect water by building dams and reservoirs, practising rainwater harvesting, digging wells; some countries have also tried to recycle and desalinate salty water to make it fit for drinking or washing. Water conservation has become a major need of the hour. The idea of groundwater recharging by harvesting rainwater is gaining importance in many parts of the world and has been practised successfully in many parts of the world.

Needs and Importance of Water Conservation

Water is an essential part of human life and plays a major role in human sustenance. We use water for drinking purpose, cooking, washing, for producing electricity, for farming, for industrial purpose and many other purposes that support the human lifestyle. Earth is about 70% water, but there is only a small amount of groundwater source that is fit for drinking and cooking purpose. Ninety - seven per cent of all the water on the earth is salt water which is not suitable for drinking. Only three per cent of all the water is fresh water, and only one per cent is available for drinking water. The other two per cent is locked in ice caps and glaciers. About 70% of the water source that is from the sea and oceans the major part contains saline water that is the salt level of this water is so high that it cannot be used for drinking purpose and purification process for this water is really high. Our water supply is finite, which means that we do not have an endless supply.
We only have the water that we have now. The adult human uses on average about 100 gallons of water a day which may seem to be a small figure but with the rising population and depleting water sources there is a fear that one day there will not be enough water sources available to meet even drinking demands. Seawater that is highly salty as a result is not fit for human consumption and not even for industrial purpose or for producing electricity. Since this water contains a high amount of salts, therefore, using this water in industries and for producing electricity leads to salt deposition on the machinery and this at times can get really dangerous and lead to some major industrial disasters. Hence sea water is of no major use for humans.
As we discussed earlier that water resources are finite and there is only 3% of freshwater sources, with all the people on Earth relying on such a small percentage of all the water on Earth, it only makes sense that we must preserve and conserve our water for our own survival otherwise a day will come when all the water sources will be extinguished. Besides conserving water it is also important that we must not pollute our water sources because it is the only water we will ever have. There are a lot of people who do not realize the importance of water, and they are continually wasting and polluting it. Only about ten per cent of wastewater is disposed of properly.
It is a high time that we must start saving water today so that it will be available to us in the future. We need to think of future generations, if we go on wasting our water resources recklessly then it is obvious that in future we will not have a sufficient supply of water unless we become more concerned with how we use our water today. There are many things that we can do to help preserve water. These are not things that are hard. All it takes is a little bit of extra effort, and soon it will be second nature. Save the water, that’s all we can do.

Major Uses of Water

We all enjoy many benefits of fresh water and use it for a majority of purpose like making electricity, cleaning, cooking, irrigating, etc. major uses of water are:
  • We use water for the daily household purpose like drinking, cleaning, washing and cooking etc.
  • Water is majorly used for agricultural activities.
  • Most widely used method of producing electricity requires water as a major source.
  • Water is used for many industrial purposes.
  • Commercial applications

                                       Water Conservation

It is often a misconception that water conservation is the job of government departments and environmental analysts which is not true, in fact water conservation is not a job that is just for these technician, soil scientist, hydrologist, forester, wildlife manager, plant scientist, city planner, park manager, farmer, rancher, or mine owner alone but involves a collective effort at community as well as personal level by every household. It is a job for the everyday person who just likes to have access to the life-sustaining resource of water. It is very important that we must all recognize that water conservation is our personal responsibility and not just leave it up to other people. It has been observed that a lot of times we tend to think that my small effort would be of no use, but if we all start thinking the same way then everyone will become ignorant and there will be an effort in this field. A collection of small effort by many people makes a lot of difference.
We all enjoy benefits of water in many ways, so it becomes our moral duty to care about our water resource and take necessary steps towards conserving our water resources. There is no need of doing something big; instead, some small practices can bear some big results. We need to ensure that we do not waste our water resources and are really vigilant in case there are any running taps.
We must learn to save water now for the future. The quality of our water is very important. We have the same amount of water now as there was when the earth was created and it is very important to realize that this is the water we have, and we must preserve its quality. Each and every effort towards water conservation counts. Water is the foundation of food and life and it would not be wrong to say that next to air, water is the most precious resource for human life and it is impossible to live without water. Saving water helps to preserve our environment. Saving water now means having water available in the future for recreational purposes, too. Conserving the water minimizes the effects of water shortages and helps us to build a better defence against future drought years. If we save water now, we are helping to ensure a water supply adequate for future generations.
Water conservation programs are typically initiated at the local level or community level, by either municipal water utilities or regional governments. Common strategies for water conservation include public outreach campaigns, tiered water rates by charging progressively higher prices as water use increases, or restrictions on outdoor water use such as lawn watering and car washing during the summer season. It is important to realize benefits and also to practice water conservation techniques in our routine life.

Methods of Conserving Water

The most important step in the direction of finding solutions to issues of water and environmental conservation is to change people's attitudes towards the fact and also changing habits which include each one of us to put in some sincere efforts. Conserve water because it is the right time to do so. We can follow some of the simple things that have been listed below and contribute to water conservation.
  • Every drop of water counts, so make sure you are not wasting clean drinking water and you are not leaving any running tap.
  • Remember to use only the amount you actually need and not wasting the water unnecessarily.
  • It has been found beneficial to form a group of water-conscious people at school, college or society level and encourage your friends and neighbours to be part of this group. Promote water conservation in community newsletters and on bulletin boards. Encourage your friends, neighbours and co-workers to also contribute.
  • Plant more and more trees to increase transpiration.
  • Encourage rainwater harvesting at the community level as well as municipal level.
  • Make sure that your home is leak-free and there are no leaking taps or tanks storing water. Many homes have leaking pipes that go unnoticed. Call a plumber as soon as you notice any leakage.
  • Do not leave the tap running while you are brushing your teeth or soaping your face.
  • When washing the car, use water from a bucket and not a hosepipe which helps to reduce about 50% of the water used for washing your car.
  • While watering your lawns do not waste water and use only the amount that is required.
  • Do not throw away water that has been used for washing vegetables and use it to water plants or to clean the floors, etc
Some other technical methods may include rainwater harvesting at the major level which has following advantages:
  • Increases water availability
  • Checks the declining water table
  • Is environmentally friendly
  • Improves the quality of groundwater through the dilution of fluoride, nitrate, and salinity
  • Prevents soil erosion and flooding especially in urban areas

Conclusion
Water conservation is a big thing and involves using water sources judiciously, but every little bit helps, every drop that you save counts so don't think that what you do doesn't matter. A whole lot of people doing a little bit adds up to a big total. We must all make some little changes in our lifestyles that will change the course of our water. It takes just a small amount of motivation and willingness to bring about a change which brings in some great results and a huge amount of satisfaction. Water conservation needs to be a way of life, not just something we think about once in a while. If we all do our part in conserving water, we can make a huge difference for the environment.

You can never get enough of the cultural diversity throughout the country. And, at the top of all these, the medium of education in most Indian universities is English which makes you comfortable if you are a foreigner.
Studying in India can be explained in the of Indian students and foreigner students. Indian students should continue here rather than going abroad due to a number of factors. Here are some of them:

Advantages of Studying in India - For Indian Students

  • You are at Home: When you travel abroad, there is always a strong possibility of you feeling homesick. You miss all the festivals, ceremonies and above all, your family. But when you study in your own country, no matter which part you live in, you can always afford to go and visit your parents. Homesickness is rather uncommon here. You gt friends whom you don’t need to explain about the cultural gap. That actually makes the life easier. You get to gel up easily. Otherwise, wouldn’t it be tough to explain to your foreigner friends when you are travelling home for Bijou? They can’t share the same enthusiasm. But back in India, you will get a reciprocation answer.
  • You know Better about the Courses and Colleges: The recent years have seen an upsurge in a number of students getting duped abroad in fake colleges. You cannot really investigate so much in the colleges there. As a result, not only the students lose too much of their money but also valuable career years. But when you decide to study in India, you can always go for yourself and check the college. You can look put for the comprehensive list of fake universities and colleges on UGC website. Also, you will most probably have some family friends who know about the college of your choice. You save money and your important time.
  • You can get a Course of Your Choice: India has a unique combination of traditional and latest courses. You can learn Sanskrit, ancient history and classical music in a number of universities. On the other hand, you can also go for research and development at institutes in IISc, IITs, and Irises. These offer you the most recent fields to work upon. As a matter of fact, most of these institutes have professors who get their education abroad. So, you also get the international exposure. Also, many Indian universities are continuo sly working to upgrade their syllabus and course structure. So, the gap between the Indian and abroad education will soon be a thing of past. As a matter of fact, in some areas like space research, India is already a pioneer. We have always been a leader in traditional science topics.
  • You get equal Global Exposure: It is actually just a misconception that you cannot get global exposure if you study here. As a matter of fact, may Indian universities like BHU, DUManipal University etc. see a surplus number of foreign students. Also, students from Bhutan, Myanmar, Bangladesh etc. get big scholarships here. So, they are in good number here. And when you have so much of students from different countries, how will you no get global exposure? Don’t you think it is a little biased of us to think of getting global exposure only when we are abroad? So, no need to ponder about this, you can get this even in the premier Indian institutes.
  • You Save Money: And at last, but not the least, you save money. If you are not from some rich family, it is going to cost your family a fortune to get you in a foreign university. Not to mention the living cost and other expenses. In India, you can get bank loans at an affordable rate. You also get a number of scholarships. So if you come from the economically weaker section, you will get lots of financial aid to complete your education.
So far we discussed the benefits of studying in India from an Indian point of view. These all imply if you are already living in India. But what if you are a resident of some other country and wish to complete your education abroad. There are a lot of lucrative options in Nordic countries, Singapore, European nations and above all USA. But studying in India has its own perks. So, why a foreigner should choose to study here? Here are some of the points:

Advantages of Studying in India - For Foreigner Students

  • Affordable Education: Education in India is affordable when compared to a course of the same level in the top world universities. You shell out almost a fourth of what you would have in the USA. Also, the living cost is way lesser than the major world cities. Of course, the places like new Delhi and Mumbai are expensive. But still, they are cheaper than New York and London. The food is always cheap, fresh and easily available. You can get the food to suit your palate. So, for very less money, you can get an education which could have cost too much anywhere else.
  • Some of the Best Universities in the World: India is gradually catching up on the university ranking front. Do let us know which college you would love to study. Just don’t forget to double check about the college’s degree validity. Have a bright future!

What if not IIT?

What if not IIT?

In a country obsessed with the prefix of an engineer, it is almost imperative for the parents to dream of their kids being one. In junior classes, you will get to hear all sorts of dreams from the kids. You will come across wannabe pilots, art teachers, tango dancers, and photographers. But once they reach their junior college level, you will be amazed to find them rushing to some coaching institutes for preparing IIT Joint Entrance Exam. What is such a rush all about? Why not follow your passion than to be a part of the rat-race?
But then there are students who are really passionate about getting into the premier engineering colleges and graduating from there. Many youngsters dream of creating their own unique identity in the engineering fields. The vast opportunities offered today are unparalleled. The advanced IT training prepares a student to be a torch-bearer in the IT revolution. Today graduates from Indian Institute of Technology's and several Indian engineering colleges are holding top positions in Google, Microsoft, and several IT giants. Every now and then, we come across some architectural marvels around the world. Just imagine the pride associated with the architects of Burj Khalifa! There are many students who want to share this pride and prestige. IITs allow students to bring these dreams to reality. The high quality of faculty and exposure is unparalleled. IITs were established with the motto of promoting industrial development in war-torn India. Over the subsequent years, they grew in number as well as student capacity. They began to attract the attention of companies all over the world. Obviously, the youngsters found themselves attracted towards these institutions.
But this is also a sad reality that the seats are limited in IITs. So, when the not so lucky kids fail to clear JEE, they begin to lose hope as if their world has ended. Come on kids! The world is full of opportunities. Do you think Mark Zuckerberg needed a degree from MIT to create Facebook? He had passion and he followed his dreams. He did not get bogged down by the academic requirements. And he won!
So, when you realize that you failed to clear IIT Joint Entrance Exam, spare few moments and introspect. Try to find your real calling. And if you realize that engineering is not the one, then work towards your real calling. You can appear in BIFT NID, law colleges, CA, CS, allied medical fields like biomedical engineering, lab technicians and so on. If you are really into computers, you can consider doing BCA and MCA. As a matter of fact, people with MCA are paid the same as engineering graduates.
And if you are passionate about being an engineer, then look at the other engineering colleges. We have got several National Institute of Technology's that offer equally good education and environment. You will get an equal number of opportunities there. And always remember, it is the talent that matters. Try to exhaust all the opportunities provided to you in these NITs. When you work really hard and smart, you are bound to succeed.
Along with the NITs, we have got a number of Indian Institute of Information Technology's, BITS Pilani, BIT Mesra, SPAs and state engineering colleges. There are a number of private engineering colleges also that are well-reputed and boast of the rich faculty and alumni. You will be surprised to know that the Google CEO Satya Nadella is not an IITian but alumni of Manipal Institute of Technology. What I want to convey here is when Satya would have failed in IIT entrance exam, he too would have been unhappy. But he did not let that failure stop him from achieving his dreams. He worked hard in the college and let the fire to succeed be in him forever. Today he might be the CEO of the biggest IT firm, but he did start modestly. So, when you too fail to clear IIT, take it as a chance to work harder. You have nothing to lose but everything to gain. Work on your weakness and hone your strong points. You have 4 years of the engineering course to make a concrete road towards your success. Utilize the chance.
Was Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose having an IIT degree? No! IITs were not even established in his time. He graduated from the University of Calcutta. But it was his endeavour and efforts that made him one of the greatest scientists of all times. Having an IIT badge is not everything. But having the persistence to excel does matter.
And who can forget our own missile man, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam! Even he wasn’t an IITian. He did his engineering from a state engineering college and went on to be the soul of India’s missile mission. But then he did work hard. And only that matters at the end. We are not saying that the IITs are bad but we are emphasizing that IITs are not the end of the world.
If you wish to get into the field of architecture, always appear for NATA. This will give you chances to apply in premiere architecture colleges of India. School of planning and architecture are spread all over the country. These are the ones that are the most sought after by future architects. If you find yourself more inclined towards building structures with an aesthetic sense, then studying the architecture should be your call. you can even pursue your career in interior designing. They have a huge demand these days. We have buildings all around us and at the same time, we are facing space crunch. A good interior designer knows how to utilize the maximum space. You must have seen the craze for space saving furniture. So, when people or organizations get a new building, they consult an interior designer in order to make their home/office look presentable and comfortable. Most construction and architecture firms hire interior designers who work in sync with the architects.
Along with all these options, you should really give it a nice long thought if you really want to be an engineer? Talk to your seniors, teachers or friends. We need to accept that Indian parents can’t see anything beyond medical and engineering streams while the world is bubbling with opportunities. There are a number of websites that offer career advice. Interact with them.  They deal with hundreds of students every day and have a good experience. They can suggest you a better career option to suit your personality and needs. They also have a good knowledge of colleges and their fees along with the placement opportunities.
If you are taking admission in some private engineering college, always inquire about the placement. There are tech colleges growing like mushrooms in our country. Majority of them don’t even have a permanent faculty, let alone proper infrastructure. Graduates from these colleges face problems in getting jobs. Also, many colleges don’t even have proper affiliations. They may have big hoardings on the prominent locations but that does not mean that they are recognized. Most of you must have read about IIPM in New Delhi. It gets front page news and big events every now and then. Just check the UGC website. You will be shocked to know that this high profile institute comes under the fake university category. You may get a job but you will never be counted as a graduate. If you wish to appear for government services or UPSC exams, you will not be eligible. So never go after the advertisements, do a proper background search before joining any college.
If your economic status allows, you can go for engineering abroad. Many countries are known for their quality yet affordable education. You will get a global exposure there. You can learn the engineering techniques there and utilize them back home. But this option is strictly based on your economic status.
And if you really want to study in IITs, then you can apply to them for post-graduate and doctoral programmes too. Your dreams can be fulfilled this way too albeit for a higher degree. But even for that, you need to qualify Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) or Joint Admission Test for M.Sc (JAM).
But the only thing that we want to tell you is that dreaming of being an IITian is good but don’t make it your desperation. Work on your personal development and growth as a person. There are opportunities all around you. You can grow on to become the CEO of a company even from your garage. Just don’t lose hope. Look at the life history of all successful people. They have all stumbled in their life but then gained their foot with confidence and hope. Take your failure as a learning step. Embrace the halt and find your shortcomings. Work on them. Work hard. Work smart. Utilize all the opportunities available to you. You will be surprised to see that your failures have taught you lessons to succeed. You will be better equipped to deal with rejections. Not only that, with passing years, you will know the exact ways to succeed. Trust us, that is how great and successful people are made. They know how they had failed and ensure not to repeat the same mistake.  Just never lose hope. Always be optimistic.
And if you need some motivation, do think about Helen Keller. She fought all odds to be the greatest of all times. She rightly said: “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.”

Wildlife Awareness and Value

               Wildlife Awareness and Value

Wildlife Awareness is an important and interesting subject of study. Wild Animals and forests form part of the vital natural resources of a country and as such, all the components of Forests are categorized under Wildlife. From time immemorial forest resources have been a source of human sustenance. They are home to the most amazing herbs, medicinal compounds, natural cosmetics etc. Forests and Wild Life go together since forests serve as a home for wildlife. Wildlife also figures prominently in aboriginal art, legend, and ceremony. Seasonal migrations of wildlife species have communal ritual values for people.

Wildlife Education deals with many issues like involves protection of forests and farming of trees to ensure contributing timber supply. takes care of forest resources by protecting them from fire, pests, disease, encroachment and indiscriminate felling of trees. The biodiversity of Wildlife of any country deserves attention because of our Dependence on Forest and Wildlife Resources.

Wildlife is The Least Understood and The Most Underestimated Source Of Sustenance. Though we depend on Wildlife we continue to destroy it and misuse it. Instead of Nurturing human greed and selfishness is causing it irreparable damage if not taken care of. Even those who understand it's valued tend to ignore or lack the will or resources to deal with it.

However Environmental and Wildlife awareness has shifted beyond a small group of concerned citizens to a global mainstream movement. Examples of such awareness are WWF, Greenpeace about important conservation concepts, such as biodiversity, sustainability, ecosystem conservation, and endangered species recovery.

Importance of Wild Life

We often don't pay much attention to this question as we consider it useless or if we do, we have a Limited or Improper knowledge. Wildlife is intricate and needs more focused attention which is not so tough when explained in an easy manner. Here we deal with this question.
  • Indicators of Environmental Health: Even though we have made so many advancements in technology, we still need nature in order to survive. Wildlife is essential to the harmony of nature. Wildlife acts as indicators of the overall state of health of Earth's environment. We need it to be healthy in order for us to stay healthy. If we did not have these indicators, how would we know the state of the environment? Therefore a healthy environment includes wildlife.
  • Source of Medicines: Animals are not meant for manufacturing medicines but the coexistence of animals and plants is important as it helps us in many ways like for example from wild forests we get important cure and ointments and if we destroy wild forests we will probably never find a cure for cancer or HIV or AIDS. Many modern remedies contain one or more ingredients derived from a wild plant or animal. One familiar example is aspirin. Its active ingredient is Salinas, which is found in the bark of willow trees. The natural world is indeed a potent medicine chest.
  • Source of Medical Treatments: Similarly in medicine, the development of new drugs and treatments depends greatly on wildlife. In fact, most pharmaceutical products have been discovered or developed by studying wild species, not invented on the basis of the principles of chemistry. Certain maggots and bees are used for treating conditions which are not treatable by Conventional Medicines.
  • Conservationists of Medicinal Assets: Wildlife is important in the discovery or development of most pharmaceutical products. Certain species destroy pests which cause damage to vegetation which is of medicinal value thereby serving the Pharmacy Industries and Humanity as well.
  • Life Sustenance: Wildlife plays a vital role in the ecological and biological processes that are essential to life itself. Wildlife and wildlife habitat plays a vital role in the ecological and biological processes that are essential for the Sustenance of Life. The functioning of the biosphere, and hence the maintenance and enhancement of human life, depends on countless interactions among plants, animals, and microorganisms. These ecological processes are essential for agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and other endeavors necessary to human life. They also help maintain environmental quality by degrading and otherwise removing some pollutants and by preventing waste accumulation.
  • Maintainers of Ecological Balance: Some of the biological processes in which wild species play a key role are pollination, germination, seed dispersal, soil generation, nutrient cycling, predication, habitat maintenance, waste breakdown, and pest control. Birds, for example, can be important in controlling insect pests. Majority of birds eat insects, some of which are a threat to our crops and other sources without which or lack of which can spell crisis.
  • Genetic Diversity: Wildlife and wildlife habitat are also important for the preservation of genetic diversity. Agriculture, forests, and fisheries all rely on crops or stocks that are adapted to local or regional conditions and that can withstand pests, diseases, predators, pollutants, and other threats.
  • Source of Tourist Economy: Wildlife Recreation is an important source for the economy. Every year thousands of visitors visit National Parks and Wildlife Habitats. Birdwatchers spend money on accommodation, food, travel, and equipment. The presence of these visitors makes a significant contribution to the local economy. The influx of foreign visitors creates seasonal job opportunities and benefits the local economy. Centers where Wildlife watching, observation or viewing has become an attraction which also generates revenues. More active pastimes such as hiking, hunting, canoeing, or wildlife photography are some of the revenue generating sources.
  • The inspiration for Arts: We may not depend directly on wildlife livelihood but the role that wildlife plays in our lives is still very important. Through the ages, wildlife has inspired such human activities as art, music, dance, drama, story-telling, and poetry. It also plays an important part in our spiritual lives, at the very least reminding us of the complexity and wonder of our world. And many of us still hang out bird feeders, buying special seed mixtures, and volunteering on behalf of wildlife.
  • The inspiration for Exercise Forms: Yoga and various martial arts are based on particular actions of animals. Certain styles of martial arts are based on animals. Similarly, many Yoga Poses have also been inspired by animals.
  • Life is Precious in all Forms: We should also respect wildlife because animals and plants have a right to live. Just because they cannot speak or express their emotions like humans does not make them less important. All the Religions of the world advocate the preciousness of all life forms. If we cannot give life, we cannot take it either.

Threats To Wildlife

  • Global climate change is causing sea ice to melt.
  • Hydroelectric power developments
  • Oil spills that occur through oil exploration, development and transportation pollute key habitats
  • Increased shipping and oil exploration
  • Agricultural and industrial pollutants
  • An ever-increasing human population
  • Inadequate law-enforcement mechanisms
  • Lack of conducive mechanisms for public participation in wildlife conservation processes
  • Inadequate financial and logistic supports of conservation areas
  • Insufficient information for wildlife resources of the country
  • Lack or Absence of awareness about the values of wildlife

Ways to Save Wildlife

  • Raising Awareness: Spread the word among friends, family members and the school community about the value and importance of wildlife and wild habitats. Educators need to nurture nature and young minds through Wild Education. Providing easy access to knowledge vital to the well-being of our lands and waters is essential.
  • Conserve Energy: Use less electricity. Turn off lights and turn down the thermostat. Encourage school administrators and parents at home to use energy-efficient appliances.
  • Tree Plantation: Plant a native tree in your backyard or in your schoolyard to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
  • New Sources of Energy: Explore the availability of “green” energy from wind or other renewable sources for use at your school.
  • Role of Young Generation: Catch them Young as the saying goes kids of today should be exposed to various activities of wildlife education and wildlife conservation. The youngsters should learn and be trained to impart knowledge about the variety and value of wildlife and it's management. Wildlife camps through their activities including periodic theory classes, practical works in upkeeping, feeding, animal behaviour studies, coaching on wildlife photography, can teach a lot about the importance of wildlife.
  • Community Participation: Encourage community participation in the management and conservation of wildlife and protected areas
  • Involve Politicians: Write to members of Parliament for action on pollution and climate change.
  • Wildlife Curriculum: Including Wildlife education in school curriculum
  • Appreciation: Appreciation of wildlife as a resource that adds color and variety to the world brings a sense of humbleness to the realization of the interconnections of all forms of life. A sense of astonishment develops eventually by its beauty, strength, and adaptability.
  • Discourage Animals Products: Using Wildlife products like shawls, ashtray, paint brushes, leather products etc. creates a market for them which in turn becomes an established business which influences more such activities.
  • Vigilance: Inform the police or concerned authorities about any illegal activity involving Wildlife. Don't visit circuses as they have animals that are endangered.
  • National Policies: To organize an appropriate forum for discussion and comment on the effectiveness of existing national policies and legislation for the appropriate conservation of wildlife and on the possibilities of updating information on the status of wildlife resources and assist in database storage.
  • Recycle and Reduce: Reduce, reuse and recycle. It takes less energy to create products from recycled goods than from raw materials. Encourage yourself and others to reduce the use of their cars. Ask them to consider an energy-efficient vehicle when replacement time comes. These steps will reduce the Burning of fossil fuels which will have a Positive effect on the environment.
  • Become Vegetarian: Vegetarianism is both healthy and a useful habit for conserving wildlife forms. Many delicacies and recipes are based on local insects, reptiles, birds etc. which have a major impact on wildlife and as such the whole environment. Many species are facing endangerment because of the human taste for flesh.
Generally, Wildlife has not been thought of as a major contributor to our well-being. But we are becoming increasingly aware of its many important benefits. Even from a strictly economic viewpoint, expenditures on wildlife conservation are justifiable. Money spent on wildlife conservation pay themselves back, with interest. The economic costs of letting our wildlife populations languish are far greater than those of protecting them. Wildlife must be managed as a sustainable resource. Sustainable use is a challenge for us to achieve, but it holds the promise of ensuring that human beings can enjoy both a healthy environment and a healthy economy. The choice is not one or the other. Sustainable use will ensure that the numerous tangible and intangible benefits of wildlife that we enjoy today can be enjoyed by future generations as well.
